Our student Mirshod Makhsudov, a sophomore majoring in Computer and Software Engineering, has won a full scholarship to study for one semester in the United States through The Global UGRAD program. We spoke with Mirshod Makhsudov and he shared his experience, which will be useful for every student.
The Global UGRAD program is an international student exchange program for Eurasia and Central Asia, administered by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. The program provides students from their first to third year of study with the opportunity to study in the United States for one academic semester, with all possible expenses (accommodation, flights, tuition, etc.) fully covered by the organizers, as well as providing a certain amount of money for the student’s pocket expenses.
“I will be studying at the University of Southern Indiana,” says Mirshod Makhsudov. “I heard about this program from a friend at IUT. The selection process can be divided into 3 stages: 1) Application, 2) Interview, and 3) TOEFL exam. During the first stage, the student must write a motivational letter, an essay on topics provided by the organizers, and a motivational letter from a professor. Also, if the student has other certificates or projects, attaching them to the application is worth it. In the first stage, you must show that you are a leader in your community and have a good academic record. The 2nd stage is a personal interview with representatives of the Ministry, UGRAD participants, and the US State Department. In the 3rd stage, you are required to take the TOEFL exam at a level of at least B1. The US Embassy also covers the costs of taking the exams. I scored 102 out of 120 possible, which is equivalent to C1 level,” says Mirshod Makhsudov with pride.
Starting August 19th, Mirshod Makhsudov plans to get acquainted with the culture, people, and sights of the USA, as well as participate in volunteer work in community events during the upcoming semester. The UGRAD program allows students to participate in community events as volunteers.
“After completing the program and returning to Uzbekistan, first of all, I will need to catch up on the program at INHA University in Tashkent,” says Mirshod Makhsudov. “I will also try to apply the knowledge I gained during my student exchange in practice to achieve progress in the IT sphere in Uzbekistan and help achieve plans to increase the volume of IT services export to $5 billion.”
